For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Therapeutic duplication of acetaminophen: Congestal contains acetaminophen; combined use with Panadol increases total daily acetaminophen exposure and risk of acute liver injury/hepatotoxicity.
Mechanism of action
Additive acetaminophen dosing can exceed safe daily limits, saturating glucuronidation/sulfation and increasing NAPQI formation → hepatotoxicity.
Clinical management
Avoid concurrent use of multiple acetaminophen-containing products. Use only one product with acetaminophen; keep total dose ≤3–4 g/day in adults (lower in hepatic disease or alcohol use). Monitor for liver injury; check LFTs if overdose suspected.
