For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: Low

Oral aminolevulinic acid causes protoporphyrin accumulation and transient photosensitivity, and labeling advises avoiding other phototoxic agents in the perioperative period. Meclofenamate has some photosensitizing potential, so additive skin phototoxicity is theoretically possible.

Mechanism of action

Additive photosensitization, with protoporphyrin IX accumulation from aminolevulinic acid plus the photosensitizing potential of the NSAID.

Clinical management

Avoid meclofenamate for about 24 hours around oral aminolevulinic acid use and use another analgesic if feasible. Advise strict protection of skin and eyes from bright light during that period.
