Overview
Both agents can cause photosensitivity, so combining them may heighten the risk of phototoxic skin reactions after oral aminolevulinic acid used for fluorescence-guided surgery. Reactions include exaggerated sunburn on exposure to light.
Mechanism of action
Additive phototoxicity: aminolevulinic acid leads to protoporphyrin IX accumulation and tetracyclines are independently photosensitizing.
Clinical management
Avoid other phototoxic drugs in the perioperative period around aminolevulinic acid dosing, and advise strict protection from sunlight and bright indoor light. Consider holding minocycline temporarily if clinically feasible.
