For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Ascorbic acid increases gastrointestinal absorption of non-heme iron, potentially raising iron exposure and GI adverse effects; can be leveraged to improve iron repletion.
Mechanism of action
Ascorbic acid reduces ferric (Fe3+) to ferrous (Fe2+) iron and forms soluble chelates, enhancing intestinal uptake.
Clinical management
If treating iron deficiency, coadminister iron with vitamin C or an acidic beverage to enhance absorption and monitor hemoglobin/ferritin. Avoid high-dose vitamin C with iron in patients with iron overload (e.g., hereditary hemochromatosis).
