aspirin + valsartan

For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: High

Aspirin (as an NSAID) may attenuate valsartan’s antihypertensive effect and increase risk of renal impairment, especially with chronic/high doses or in at-risk patients.

Mechanism of action

Renal prostaglandin inhibition by aspirin → afferent arteriolar constriction, sodium/water retention; combined with ARB-mediated efferent dilation → reduced GFR and blunted BP response.

Clinical management

Avoid chronic/high-dose aspirin if possible. If low-dose antiplatelet therapy is needed, use the lowest effective dose and monitor BP, serum creatinine/eGFR, and potassium within 1–2 weeks of initiation or dose change and periodically.
