Drug interactions
aceclofenac + balsalazide
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Balsalazide releases mesalamine in the colon, and aceclofenac is an NSAID. Both can affect the kidney, so combined use may add to the risk of renal impairment, particularly in dehydrated patients or those with existing kidney disease. Mesalamine itself rarely causes nephrotoxicity, but it is recognized.
Mechanism of action
Additive nephrotoxic potential through NSAID-mediated reduction of renal prostaglandins together with rare mesalamine-associated interstitial nephritis.
Clinical management
Monitor serum creatinine and urine output periodically, especially at the start of therapy and in patients with renal risk factors. Prefer to avoid regular NSAID use in inflammatory bowel disease where possible.
