Drug interactions
acetazolamide + ondansetron
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Acetazolamide can cause hypokalemia; electrolyte abnormalities increase ondansetron-associated QT prolongation and torsades de pointes risk, especially with higher IV doses or other risk factors.
Mechanism of action
Acetazolamide-induced potassium/magnesium depletion increases susceptibility to ondansetron-mediated QTc prolongation (pharmacodynamic).
Clinical management
Check and correct K/Mg before and during ondansetron; consider baseline/interval ECG in at-risk patients; use lowest effective ondansetron dose; consider alternative antiemetic if significant hypokalemia or prolonged QTc.
