For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Balsalazide is delivered to the colon and releases mesalamine, a salicylate-related compound. Combining it with aspirin may add salicylate exposure, and aspirin could compete for renal tubular secretion of metabolites. The clinical effect is generally small, but renal function should be considered.
Mechanism of action
Possible competition for renal tubular secretion and additive salicylate exposure.
Clinical management
No routine adjustment is needed; monitor renal function periodically in patients on high-dose aspirin with balsalazide.
