Drug interactions
aminolevulinic acid + celecoxib
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Oral aminolevulinic acid causes protoporphyrin accumulation and transient photosensitivity, and labeling advises avoiding other phototoxic agents in the perioperative period. Celecoxib, a sulfonamide-containing NSAID, has rare photosensitivity reports, so an additive effect is theoretically possible.
Mechanism of action
Additive photosensitization, with protoporphyrin IX accumulation from aminolevulinic acid plus the photosensitizing potential of celecoxib.
Clinical management
Where feasible, withhold celecoxib or choose a non-photosensitizing analgesic for about 24 hours around aminolevulinic acid dosing. Advise strict protection of skin and eyes from bright light.
