Drug interactions
aminolevulinic acid + diflunisal
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Oral aminolevulinic acid causes photosensitivity, and other agents with phototoxic potential could add to the risk of skin reactions after light exposure. Diflunisal has a modest photosensitizing potential, so the interaction is largely theoretical.
Mechanism of action
Additive photosensitization from protoporphyrin accumulation and the drug's phototoxic potential.
Clinical management
Counsel the patient to avoid sunlight and bright indoor light for the period specified in the aminolevulinic acid labeling. Consider holding diflunisal during that period if clinically feasible.
