Oral aminolevulinic acid causes protoporphyrin accumulation and marked photosensitivity, and isotretinoin can further increase skin sensitivity to light. Combined exposure raises the risk of severe phototoxic skin reactions.
Mechanism of action
Additive photosensitization from a photosensitizing agent and a retinoid.
Clinical management
Avoid giving isotretinoin around the perioperative aminolevulinic acid period where possible, and enforce strict light protection as labeled. Consider deferring isotretinoin until photosensitivity risk has passed.
