For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: High

NSAIDs can reduce the natriuretic/antihypertensive response to loop diuretics and increase risk of nephrotoxicity.

Mechanism of action

Prostaglandin inhibition leads to sodium and water retention and decreased renal blood flow; may also compete for tubular secretion, reducing furosemide effect.

Clinical management

Avoid NSAIDs when possible. Monitor weight/edema, urine output, blood pressure, and serum creatinine after NSAID initiation or dose changes; adjust diuretic as needed.
