Summary

Both drugs lower serum potassium, and high-dose or repeated albuterol with indapamide may cause clinically significant hypokalemia. This may predispose to arrhythmias, especially in patients with cardiac disease or hypoxia.

What this interaction means in plain words

Albuterol and Indapamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive hypokalemia from beta-2 stimulated cellular potassium uptake and diuretic-induced renal potassium loss.

What to do

Monitor serum potassium, particularly with high-dose nebulized albuterol or acute asthma and COPD exacerbations. Replace potassium as needed.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
