Mécanisme d'action
The stimulant laxative activity of sodium picosulfate, when ingested with additional fluids, produces watery diarrhea. Sodium picosulfate: Hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria to form an active metabolite, acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate colonic peristalsis.
Posologie adulte habituelle (résumé de la notice)
25-40 drops daily.
Grossesse et allaitement
- Grossesse
- Safe No human data; no harm in rats at bowel-prep doses (US); UK label cites animal reproductive toxicity and, for a stimulant laxative, says preferably avoid. CRAT: laxatives in pregnancy show no malformation or fetal effect. Try fibre, fluids and osmotic laxatives first; short use if needed.
- Allaitement
- Safe Not absorbed from the gut, and its active metabolite was undetectable in milk after 10 mg daily (US label). LactMed: can be taken while breastfeeding with no special precautions.
Effets indésirables signalés
- Abdominal Pain
- Electrolyte abnormalities, including hypokalemia
Contre-indications
- Ileus or intestinal obstruction.
- Severe painful and/or feverish acute abdominal conditions (e.g. appendicitis) potentially associated with nausea and vomiting.
- Acute inflammatory bowel diseases.
Précautions particulières
- Should not be used in children or adolescents under 18 years.
- Do not use continuously on a daily basis for more than five days without investigating the cause of constipation.
- Long-term everyday use of stimulant laxatives may harm intestinal function and should be avoided. Use only if diet change or bulk-forming agents fail.
