Résumé
Carbenoxolone causes mineralocorticoid-like sodium and water retention and potassium loss, which can raise blood pressure and oppose the antihypertensive effect. Combined with chlorthalidone, the risk of hypokalemia is considerably increased.
Ce que signifie cette interaction, en termes simples
Atenolol-chlorthalidone and Carbenoxolone can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Pourquoi elle survient
Carbenoxolone inhibits 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, producing mineralocorticoid excess that adds to thiazide-induced potassium wasting and counteracts antihypertensive therapy.
Conduite à tenir
Avoid the combination where possible; if used, monitor serum potassium and blood pressure regularly and correct hypokalemia promptly.
