Résumé
Oral calcium salts bind etidronate in the gut and reduce how much is absorbed. Etidronate is already poorly absorbed, so the bone effect may be blunted if both are taken together.
Ce que signifie cette interaction, en termes simples
Calcium acetate and Etidronate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Calcium acetate belongs to Genitourinary; Etidronate belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Pourquoi elle survient
Divalent calcium cations chelate etidronate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming poorly absorbable complexes.
Conduite à tenir
Give etidronate on an empty stomach and keep calcium-containing products, including phosphate binders, apart from it for at least 2 hours, as in the product labeling for etidronate cycles. Take calcium only during the non-etidronate phase of cyclic therapy where possible.
