Amide-type local anesthetics stabilize neuronal membranes and prevent generation/conduction of nerve impulses by reducing sodium permeability and increasing action potential threshold.

- Safe Skin cream with low absorption. Animal studies showed no fetal harm, and both drugs have long been used in pregnancy without reported harm; they cross the placenta. UK label: use with care (limited data). Avoid large areas or long applications (prilocaine can cause methaemoglobinaemia).

- Safe Lidocaine, and probably prilocaine, pass into milk in very small amounts (US label: use caution). UK label: can be used while breastfeeding; no risk to the infant at usual doses. Do not apply to the breast or nipple.
