H2-receptor antagonist; blocks H2-receptors of gastric parietal cells, leading to inhibition of gastric secretions, Relative Potency: 1.

Benign Gastric Ulcer: 800 mg PO qHS OR 400 mg PO q12hr OR 300 mg PO q6hr

- Safe Large studies show no increase in birth defects. Acceptable for heartburn or ulcers when antacids are not enough; famotidine is often preferred because cimetidine has more drug interactions.

- Safe US label advises against breastfeeding. LactMed: passes into milk at levels above maternal blood, but infant doses are small and no harm has been reported, so it is acceptable; famotidine is often preferred.
