Summary

Intravenous calcium chloride can reverse the hemodynamic effects of calcium channel blockers and is used as an antidote in overdose. In a patient taking amlodipine, a calcium bolus may therefore reduce its blood pressure lowering effect. The interaction is relevant mainly with parenteral dosing.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amlodipine-olmesartan and Calcium chloride can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Increased extracellular calcium overcomes L-type calcium channel blockade, antagonizing amlodipine's vasodilation.

What to do

Monitor blood pressure and heart rate when giving IV calcium to patients on amlodipine, and expect a reduced antihypertensive effect.

What to ask your pharmacist
