Summary
Carbenoxolone has mineralocorticoid-like activity causing sodium and water retention, hypokalemia and raised blood pressure. This can oppose the antihypertensive effect of amlodipine-olmesartan. The potassium-sparing effect of olmesartan may partly offset hypokalemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-olmesartan and Carbenoxolone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Carbenoxolone inhibits 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, producing mineralocorticoid excess, fluid retention and potassium loss that antagonize the antihypertensive.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, fluid status and serum potassium; consider stopping carbenoxolone if hypertension or edema develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
