Summary
Thiazide diuretics are commonly combined with ARBs and give additive blood pressure lowering. Excess hypotension or volume depletion can occur, and the ARB reduces thiazide-induced potassium loss. Sodium and kidney function may also change.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-olmesartan and Methyclothiazide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Additive antihypertensive effect via diuresis and RAAS blockade; the ARB offsets thiazide-related hypokalemia.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, electrolytes and renal function after starting or adjusting doses. Watch for volume depletion in older patients.
