Summary
Tricyclic antidepressants can potentiate the pressor and arrhythmic effects of sympathomimetics. With a topical nasal decongestant such as xylometazoline systemic exposure is low, so the effect is usually modest, but hypertension or tachycardia may occur with heavy use or in susceptible patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amoxapine and Xylometazoline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Amoxapine blocks norepinephrine reuptake, which can enhance adrenergic responses to absorbed sympathomimetic amines.
What to do
Use xylometazoline at the lowest dose for the shortest period (a few days). Monitor blood pressure and heart rate in patients with cardiovascular disease.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
