Summary
Thiazide diuretics and corticosteroids both promote potassium loss, so using them together can cause additive hypokalemia. The risk is greater with oral or otherwise systemically available budesonide and in patients on digoxin or QT-prolonging drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bendroflumethiazide and Budesonide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive urinary potassium wasting from thiazide-induced distal delivery of sodium and corticosteroid mineralocorticoid effects.
What to do
Check serum potassium at baseline and periodically during combined use, and supplement potassium if low. Consider a potassium-sparing strategy where appropriate.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
