Summary
Benzphetamine is a sympathomimetic anorectic that can raise blood pressure and heart rate. This can oppose the antihypertensive effect of hydralazine, and hydralazine-induced reflex tachycardia may be additive with the stimulant effect.
What this interaction means in plain words
Benzphetamine and Hydralazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Sympathomimetic-mediated vasoconstriction and increased cardiac output counteract hydralazine vasodilation.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and heart rate when the two are combined. Adjust the antihypertensive regimen or reconsider the anorectic if control is lost.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
