Summary
Intravenous calcium produces positive inotropic effects and can transiently counteract the negative inotropic and hypotensive effects of beta-blockers. Conversely, calcium given rapidly to patients on beta-blockers may still provoke bradyarrhythmias. The clinical relevance mainly arises in acute settings.
What this interaction means in plain words
Betaxolol and Calcium chloride have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Calcium-mediated increase in myocardial contractility functionally opposes beta-blocker effects.
What to do
When IV calcium is given to a patient on betaxolol, monitor ECG and blood pressure and infuse slowly.
