Both drugs lower blood pressure, and the combination is commonly used deliberately for hypertension. Thiazides can cause hypokalemia, hyperglycemia and hyperuricemia, and beta-blockers may mask hypoglycemia symptoms and slightly worsen glucose control.

What this interaction means in plain words

Bisoprolol and Methyclothiazide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive antihypertensive effect through different mechanisms; thiazide-induced electrolyte and metabolic changes may add to beta-blocker effects on glucose.

What to do

Monitor blood pressure, serum potassium and glucose, particularly in diabetic patients. Correct hypokalemia if it occurs.
