Summary
Corticosteroids given at above-physiologic systemic doses can blunt the antibody response to vaccines. The HPV vaccine may therefore produce a weaker or shorter-lived protective response in a patient on substantial systemic budesonide. Inhaled, topical or low-dose use is unlikely to matter clinically.
What this interaction means in plain words
Budesonide and Human papillomavirus vaccine quadrivalent can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Corticosteroid-mediated immunosuppression reduces vaccine-induced B and T cell responses.
What to do
Where possible, give the vaccine series before starting prolonged systemic budesonide or at a time of lowest steroid dose; vaccination is not contraindicated as it is not a live vaccine. Do not delay the series for inhaled or low-dose therapy.
