Summary
Both drugs can lower serum potassium. Carbenoxolone has mineralocorticoid-like activity that promotes potassium loss, and beta-2 agonists shift potassium into cells. Combined use may cause clinically significant hypokalemia, with a risk of arrhythmia, especially in patients with heart disease or on other potassium-wasting drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Carbenoxolone and Formoterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive hypokalemia from carbenoxolone-induced renal potassium wasting and beta-2 mediated intracellular potassium shift by formoterol.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium at baseline and periodically during combined use, and replace potassium as needed. Take particular care in patients with cardiac disease or on other drugs that lower potassium.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
