Summary

Both carboplatin and iodinated contrast agents can injure the kidney, and carboplatin is renally cleared, so reduced renal function raises its exposure and myelosuppression. Contrast-induced nephropathy may therefore increase carboplatin toxicity. The risk is higher with pre-existing renal impairment or dehydration.

What this interaction means in plain words

Carboplatin and Ioversol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive nephrotoxicity, with reduced renal clearance of carboplatin.

What to do

Hydrate the patient and check serum creatinine before and after contrast. Recalculate the carboplatin dose from current renal function and monitor blood counts.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
