Summary
Celiprolol is a beta-blocker with beta-1 selectivity and can blunt the bronchodilator effect of formoterol. This may reduce asthma or COPD control, and beta-blockade may leave patients less responsive to rescue beta-agonists. Celiprolol also has some partial beta-2 agonist activity, so the effect may be less than with other beta-blockers.
What this interaction means in plain words
Celiprolol and Formoterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism at beta-adrenergic receptors between the beta-blocker and the beta-2 agonist.
What to do
Monitor respiratory symptoms and lung function when the two are combined. Use only if the beta-blocker is clearly needed, and consider a non-beta-blocker alternative in patients with significant airway disease.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
