Summary

Ketamine normally raises heart rate and blood pressure through sympathetic stimulation, whereas celiprolol is a beta-blocker with vasodilating properties. The beta-blocker may blunt the sympathomimetic effect and, in catecholamine-depleted patients, ketamine's direct myocardial depressant effect may produce hypotension or bradycardia.

What this interaction means in plain words

Celiprolol and Ketamine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic opposition of ketamine's sympathetic stimulation by beta-blockade, with possible additive hypotension.

What to do

Monitor blood pressure and heart rate during and after ketamine administration, and have vasopressors and fluids available. Titrate ketamine dose to effect.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
