Summary

Beta blockers can oppose the bronchodilating effect of theophylline, and nonselective agents may also raise its levels. Celiprolol is beta-1 selective with partial beta-2 agonist activity, so the risk is lower than with nonselective drugs. Bronchospasm or theophylline toxicity is possible in susceptible patients.

What this interaction means in plain words

Celiprolol and Theophylline have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic antagonism at beta-receptors, with possible reduced theophylline metabolism.

What to do

Monitor respiratory status and theophylline levels when starting celiprolol in patients with airway disease. Prefer cardioselective agents and avoid nonselective ones.
