Summary
Sodium bicarbonate alkalinizes the urine, which reduces the renal elimination of amphetamines. Dextroamphetamine exposure and duration of action can rise, increasing the risk of stimulant adverse effects such as tachycardia, hypertension, agitation and insomnia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dextroamphetamine and Sodium bicarbonate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dextroamphetamine belongs to Central Nervous System; Sodium bicarbonate belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.
Why it happens
Urinary alkalinization increases the non-ionized fraction of dextroamphetamine, enhancing tubular reabsorption and reducing renal clearance.
What to do
Monitor heart rate, blood pressure and signs of stimulant excess when systemic alkalinizing agents are used regularly. Consider reducing the dextroamphetamine dose if symptoms of overstimulation appear.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
