Summary

Ergoloid mesylates are ergot derivatives, and combining them with a triptan may add to vasoconstriction. The risk of vasospastic ischemia is of concern, although ergoloids have weaker vasoconstrictor action than other ergots.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ergoloid mesylates and Frovatriptan are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive vasoconstrictive effects of a 5-HT1B/1D agonist and an ergot alkaloid.

What to do

Avoid use within 24 hours of each other. Review whether ergoloid therapy is still necessary.
