Summary
Estazolam is a benzodiazepine hypnotic, and together with esketamine it can produce deeper sedation and slower breathing than either drug alone. Impaired coordination and next-day impairment are also more likely.
What this interaction means in plain words
Esketamine and Estazolam can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression from GABA-A potentiation by the benzodiazepine and NMDA receptor antagonism by esketamine.
What to do
Monitor sedation and respiratory status through the post-dose observation period, and consider holding the benzodiazepine dose on treatment days. Counsel the patient on avoiding driving and hazardous activity.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
