Summary

Inhaled anesthetics such as ether sensitize the myocardium to catecholamines and may provoke ventricular arrhythmias when sympathomimetics are present. Absorbed xylometazoline could also add to hypertension during anesthesia.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ether and Xylometazoline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Myocardial sensitization to catecholamines by the anesthetic combined with the alpha-adrenergic vasoconstrictor effect of the decongestant.

What to do

Avoid use of nasal decongestants immediately before or during anesthesia. Monitor ECG and blood pressure if the combination cannot be avoided.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
