Summary

Both drugs can prolong the QT interval, so using them together may raise the risk of ventricular arrhythmia. The risk is higher with hypokalemia, structural heart disease or other QT-prolonging drugs.

What this interaction means in plain words

Formoterol and Tropisetron can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive QT prolongation, with formoterol-induced hypokalemia as a further contributor.

What to do

Correct potassium and magnesium before use and consider an ECG in patients with cardiac risk factors. Choose an alternative antiemetic if QTc is already prolonged.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
