Summary

Non-acetylated salicylates have weaker platelet effects than aspirin but can still cause GI irritation and, at high doses, affect hemostasis. Together with heparin there may be a small additional bleeding risk.

What this interaction means in plain words

Heparin and Salicylates have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Weak additive effect on hemostasis and GI mucosa; non-acetylated salicylates do not irreversibly inhibit platelet COX.

What to do

Monitor for bleeding signs, particularly at higher salicylate doses. Routine aPTT or anti-Xa monitoring suffices.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
  • Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
