Summary
Methyclothiazide is a second thiazide diuretic, so combining it with a product that already contains hydrochlorothiazide duplicates therapy. This adds to diuresis, volume depletion, hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypotension and renal impairment without much extra antihypertensive benefit.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide-olmesartan and Methyclothiazide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Therapeutic duplication of thiazide diuretics produces additive inhibition of renal sodium chloride reabsorption.
What to do
Avoid using two thiazides together and stop methyclothiazide unless there is a specific indication. If they are co-administered, check electrolytes, creatinine and blood pressure.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
