Summary
Hydrocortisone is not a meaningful CYP3A4 inducer at usual doses, so a clinically relevant reduction in sertindole levels is not established. Corticosteroids can lower potassium, which is relevant for QT-prolonging sertindole.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrocortisone and Sertindole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Corticosteroid-induced hypokalemia may add to the QT-prolonging risk of sertindole; any enzyme effect is minor.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and magnesium and correct deficits. Perform ECG monitoring if systemic hydrocortisone is given at high doses or for prolonged periods.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
