Summary
Rotavirus vaccine contains live attenuated virus, which could replicate excessively in a patient immunosuppressed by ifosfamide. This raises the risk of prolonged vaccine-virus gastrointestinal infection, and the vaccine response may be reduced.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ifosfamide and Rotavirus oral vaccine live are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression allows unchecked replication of live attenuated virus and impairs the vaccine response.
What to do
Avoid live vaccines during ifosfamide therapy and for at least 3 months after it ends. Seek specialist advice if an infant is exposed through a treated household member.
