Summary
Pirbuterol moves potassium into cells and indapamide increases urinary potassium loss, so together they can produce clinically relevant hypokalemia. This increases the risk of arrhythmias, particularly with other QT-prolonging drugs or digoxin.
What this interaction means in plain words
Indapamide and Pirbuterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive hypokalemia from beta-2 mediated cellular potassium uptake and diuretic-induced renal potassium loss.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and magnesium, especially at the start of therapy and with frequent pirbuterol use. Replace potassium as needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
