Summary
Levosalbutamol shifts potassium into cells, and bowel-preparation solutions can cause fluid and electrolyte losses, including hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia. Together they may increase the risk of low potassium and related arrhythmias, particularly in patients with cardiac disease or on other QT-prolonging drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Levosalbutamol and Sodium sulfate / potassium chloride / magnesium sulfate / polyethylene glycol have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Additive lowering of serum potassium through beta-2-mediated intracellular shift plus gastrointestinal electrolyte losses.
What to do
Check serum potassium and magnesium in patients with cardiac risk factors or on frequent high-dose levosalbutamol around bowel preparation. Correct electrolyte abnormalities before the procedure.
