Summary
Both terbutaline and thiazide diuretics can lower serum potassium. Combined use may cause clinically significant hypokalemia, which increases the risk of arrhythmias and muscle weakness, especially with high-dose or repeated terbutaline.
What this interaction means in plain words
Methyclothiazide and Terbutaline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive hypokalemia from beta-2-mediated cellular potassium uptake plus thiazide-induced renal potassium loss.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and magnesium, particularly at the start of therapy or when terbutaline doses are increased. Supplement potassium or add a potassium-sparing agent if hypokalemia develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
