Summary
Rifampin induces CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 and may lower rabeprazole exposure. Because rabeprazole is largely cleared non-enzymatically, the effect is smaller than with other PPIs but may still reduce acid suppression.
What this interaction means in plain words
Rabeprazole and Rifampin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Rifampin induces CYP2C19 and CYP3A4, minor pathways of rabeprazole metabolism.
What to do
Monitor symptom control and increase the rabeprazole dose if acid suppression is inadequate. Consider an acid suppressant less dependent on CYP metabolism if needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
