Summary
Telavancin can prolong the QTc interval, and high-dose or systemic albuterol can cause tachycardia, hypokalemia and QT changes. Together they may add to the risk of ventricular arrhythmia, especially with nebulised high doses or electrolyte disturbances.
What this interaction means in plain words
Albuterol and Telavancin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation, with beta-agonist-induced hypokalemia as a further contributor.
What to do
Check potassium and magnesium and correct deficits. Obtain an ECG in patients with cardiac risk factors or on high-dose beta-agonist therapy.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
