Summary
Systemic or injected triamcinolone suppresses cellular immunity, so a live attenuated zoster vaccine may replicate excessively and cause disseminated vaccine-strain disease. The immune response to the vaccine may also be blunted. The risk depends on the dose and duration of corticosteroid exposure.
What this interaction means in plain words
Triamcinolone and Zoster vaccine live are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Corticosteroid-induced immunosuppression impairs control of live-virus replication and reduces vaccine immunogenicity.
What to do
Avoid live zoster vaccine in patients on immunosuppressive doses of triamcinolone; defer vaccination until corticosteroid therapy has been stopped for the interval stated in the product labeling. Consider the non-live recombinant zoster vaccine where appropriate.
