Indications
Mécanisme d'action
Applied topically, it markedly reduces the bacterial population in the avascular tissues of second- and third-degree burns and exerts bacteriostatic action against many gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Posologie adulte habituelle (résumé de la notice)
Second- and third-degree burns (adjunctive): apply cream topically with sterile gloved hand once or twice daily to a thickness of approximately 1/16 inch; keep burned areas covered with cream at all times; continue until healing is progressing well or site is ready for grafting.
Grossesse et allaitement
- Grossesse
- Unknown Burn cream/solution; absorbed through large burns. No animal reproduction studies; fetal risk unknown. US label: not recommended in women who could become pregnant unless the burn covers more than 20% of the body or the benefit outweighs the possible fetal risk.
- Allaitement
- Unknown Not known if it passes into milk; no LactMed or e-lactancia record. US label: decide whether to stop breastfeeding or the drug. Large burns give real absorption (it can cause metabolic acidosis), so avoid if possible; never apply to the breast.
Effets indésirables signalés
- Pain or burning sensation on application
- Rash
- Itching
- Facial edema
- Eosinophilia
- Tachypnea or hyperventilation
Contre-indications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug; cross-sensitivity to other sulfonamides is not known.
Précautions particulières
- Fatal hemolytic anemia with disseminated intravascular coagulation, presumably related to G6PD deficiency, has been reported.
- Contains sodium metabisulfite, which may cause allergic-type reactions including anaphylaxis and asthmatic episodes in susceptible people.
- Mafenide and its metabolite inhibit carbonic anhydrase, which may cause metabolic acidosis; monitor acid-base balance closely, especially in extensive second-degree burns and pulmonary or renal dysfunction.
Informez votre pharmacien ou votre médecin en cas de grossesse ou d'allaitement, de maladie rénale ou hépatique, d'allergies, ainsi que de tout autre médicament ou complément que vous prenez.
