Mécanisme d'action
Similar to other beta-lactam antimicrobials, meticillin blocks synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Meticillin stops cross-linkage between the peptidoglycan polymer chains, which make up a large portion of gram-positive bacterial cell walls.
Posologie adulte habituelle (résumé de la notice)
1 gram injected into a muscle every four to six hours; or 1 gram injected into a vein every six hours.
Mode de prise habituel
Penicillin antibiotics are taken by mouth or given by injection at regular intervals for a set number of days; the course should be completed even when symptoms improve early.

- Safe Penicillin antibiotic; penicillins are generally acceptable in pregnancy. Methicillin itself is no longer marketed; flucloxacillin or similar agents are used instead.
- Allaitement
- Safe Small amounts pass into milk and are not expected to harm the infant. LactMed: acceptable; watch for diarrhoea or thrush.

Précautions particulières
- Penicillins may cause false test results with some urine sugar tests.
Anyone who has had an allergic reaction to a penicillin or another beta-lactam antibiotic must tell the prescriber before taking one. Severe or persistent diarrhoea during or after a course needs medical advice.
