Indications
Mécanisme d'action
Interferes with cell wall mucopeptide synthesis during active multiplication, resulting in bactericidal activity against susceptible microorganisms.

Group A Streptococcal Respiratory Infections: 1.2 million U IM x1
Mode de prise habituel
Penicillin antibiotics are taken by mouth or given by injection at regular intervals for a set number of days; the course should be completed even when symptoms improve early.
Grossesse et allaitement
- Grossesse
- Safe Penicillin is the drug of choice for syphilis in pregnancy and prevents congenital syphilis; no increased birth defects. Use when indicated; watch for a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, which can trigger contractions.
- Allaitement
- Safe Small amounts pass into milk. Acceptable; watch the infant for diarrhoea, thrush or rash.

Contre-indications
- Hypersensitivity; serious and occasionally fatal reactions have been reported
Précautions particulières
- Severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR), such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), etc.
- Pseudomembranous colitis reported with antibacterial agents, including penicillin G
- Administer by deep intramuscular injection only in the upper, outer quadrant of buttock (dorsogluteal) or ventrogluteal site.
Anyone who has had an allergic reaction to a penicillin or another beta-lactam antibiotic must tell the prescriber before taking one. Severe or persistent diarrhoea during or after a course needs medical advice.
